Small De Soto School District stands out in a big way

Despite the size disparity between the De Soto School District and powerhouse districts such as Olathe, Shawnee Mission and Blue Valley, De Soto is a Johnson County district where education expectations are high even if resources are fewer.

Crusader SuEllen Fried reaches out to end violence

SuEllen Fried has spent most of her life curbing violence in adults and children alike. Thirty years ago, she co-founded Reaching Out from Within, which offers self-help for violent prison inmates who wish to reform their lives. She also started BullySafeUSA, a program that educates students about bullying at a young age.

Five Johnson County bus routes fall victim to dwindling transit funding

As a result, the Johnson County Commission recently voted unanimously to eliminate five bus routes, including the route to Olathe from Spring Hill and Paola; the route servicing De Soto, and the route servicing Spring Hill. The route from downtown Kansas City to Olathe and the route from Kansas City, Kan., to Johnson County also are being axed, but parts of those two routes will be accessible via another Johnson County route.

Housing market continues to gain

The Johnson County housing market had another strong month in July, with sales and construction activity climbing from year-earlier levels.
