Charges were filed Monday against an Olathe man accused of fleeing the scene after a car fatally struck another man along Interstate 35 in Johnson County over the weekend.
Christopher P. Randolph Sr., 41, the father of six children, died about 2:30 a.m. Saturday while putting gas into his minivan in a construction zone on the freeway just north of College Boulevard.
On Monday, Johnson County prosecutors charged 26-year-old Brock Tyler James with a felony count of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. Bond was set at $50,000.
The Kansas Highway Patrol said James was arrested Sunday night.
Randolph’s girlfriend told KCTV5, The Star’s reporting partner, of her effort to save Randolph. Charlesetta Redd said that just after telling him to be careful when he got out of the van, “a car just came and knocked him over.”
Redd said she got out of the van and tried to get to Randolph, but other cars hit him. She suffered burns to her legs from the exhaust after crawling beneath the minivan.
The KCTV5 report said Randolph left behind six siblings and six children.
