The Missouri Highway Patrol has identified the man killed on a snow-covered Interstate 35 in Kearney as 35-year-old Christopher M. Barnes of Shawnee.

Barnes was fatally injured in one of several crashes late Monday afternoon along I-35 in Kearney that temporarily shut down the southbound lanes of I-35.

Barnes was struck after getting out of a vehicle involved in a crash. He walked behind a 2010 Chevrolet driven by Jessica F. Hamell, 23, of Des Moines, that was stopped on the right shoulder of I-35. A 2004 Jeep driven by Max G. Francisco, 19, of Kansas City, began to slide forward on the snow-covered road.

The Jeep struck Barnes and then the other vehicle. The Jeep then slid off the right side of the road, coming to rest in a ditch.

Barnes was taken to a hospital where he later died. The drivers of the two vehicles were not injured.
