Olathe is inching closer to having a new city auditor.

At its meeting Tuesday evening, the City Council decided to continue with proceedings for hiring the position. After six years, the former city auditor, John Curran, left the job last month to become the director of internal audit for the University of Kansas.

Some of the tasks assigned to the city auditor position include risk assessment, overseeing efficiency, keeping an eye on what fees are owed the city and carefully observing each department.

“The auditing position is so valuable to us because it not only saves us money in the long run, but it provides an extra set of eyes for the council and citizens of Olathe,” said councilwoman Marge Vogt. “We want someone who can help us excel at what we do.”

Councilman John Bacon agreed.

“I think an organization this size really benefits from having an auditor because it helps keep people on their toes,” he said.

But finding the ideal candidate will be tricky, the council concurred.

“It’s a unique profile to fit because we want someone who can help keep an eye on things, but who also gets along well with everyone,” said Councilman Ron Ryckman. “I think we should take our time finding the right person, but I also don’t think we should spend too much time.”

The council will soon be putting together a profile on the characteristics they are looking for in a candidate, and then will accept applications.
