Johnson County Sheriff Frank Denning says having more responsible people in possession of firearms is a better way to prevent mass shootings than more gun control laws.
In a message posted Friday on the sheriff’s office website, Denning likened gun control to “unilateral personal disarmament” and said the Founding Fathers were spinning in their graves at the idea of politicians imposing restrictions on law-abiding citizens.
Denning, who has held the elective post of sheriff for more than 11 years, said the Obama administration’s proposals to ban assault weapons and high-capacity clips would not have prevented the shootings in Aurora, Colo., and Newtown, Conn.
“As Sheriff, I will never support, nor advocate for, ANY legislation at ANY level (local, state or federal) that would restrict the legal possession or ownership of any type of firearm (or high-capacity magazine) by lawful, law-abiding, tax-paying citizens of Johnson County, Kansas and of the United States of America,” Denning wrote.

4 months agoGee Whiz Frank,
EXACTLY how do you think your ideas should be implemented ? I mean EXACTLY. Why is it that the other 299,999,999 people in the United States have not seen the light in the same way you have ?
“Keep people who should not have guns from having guns”, gosh, how novel.
How about reducing the availability of guns down ?
And personally - I think our founding fathers would be spinning in their graves over our lack of testicular fortitude in reducing this issue. How close to needing a “Well armed militia” do you think we are ? North Korea close, Cuba close, Sudan close ? Anything on the horizon ?

4 months agoThere are >100 million REGISTERED legal gun owners in America (FBI) and likely as many as 1/2 billion guns in America (BATF) in the hands of Americans. I haven’t a clue where Adams here gets his figures from. I guess some of u just are happy being lead around by that obama installed nose ring.

4 months agoThe only reason Frank loves this idea, as do all other heads of police and sheriff departments do is because! There is not enough police and sheriff’s to adequately cover the area they are suppose to patrol and monitor. So when the good citizen can take out a bad guy or detain him because the police and sheriff departments can’t get there in time, because they undermanned and spread way to thin. The good citizen is basically doing the policeman’s job.

4 months agoHey Frank, right on. Let’s legalize bazookas and flamethrowers, grenades and mach 10 machine guns. Fireworks, though - no way we should have ~those~ on the loose.

4 months agoI am grateful to Sheriff Denning and all the other sheriffs across the country that are standing up to the possibility of the federal government over-reaching on gun control. Law abiding citizens should not have their right to defend themselves taken away.

3 months, 4 weeks agobanning the assault type weapons and high cap magazines solves nothing. my ruger mini is not considered a assault weapon. it fires the same .223 as my AR 15. as for high cap mags. i can change a 10 round in .8 seconds on most all my rifles and same on handguns. to lessen the mass shootings lets work on the taking care of the actual shooter

3 months, 3 weeks agoSo if someone develops a micro nuclear bushmaster 10, should I be able to purchase and own it too, I mean I want to be better armed so if some one attacks me with an AK 47 I have a chance. Where does the craziness stop?
