Customers follow Geno wherever he goes

Geno and Lena Fuksman own Geno's Clothiers in the Park Place shopping center, 5256 W. 116th Place, Leawood.

The Kansas City Star

James White of Leawood lavishes praise on Geno’s Clothiers as the shop’s owner sets aside two pairs of new Levi jeans. The jeans will be altered to White’s specifications.

After eight years at 135th Street and Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park, Geno’s has relocated to Leawood’s Park Place. Owner Geno Fuksman hopes to pick up more foot traffic from the center’s shops and restaurants. But loyal customers, like White, also have followed him to the new store at 5256 W. 116th Place.

“Everyone knows (Geno) and the tailoring work is the highest quality in town and the clothing lines are first class,” said White, who has shopped at Geno’s for about five years.

Fuksman had owned and operated a men’s clothing store in Russia before emigrating in 1992. Five years later, he opened an Overland Park tailoring shop and then, after building a following, he opened a men’s clothing and accessories store in 2004 with his wife, Lena Fuksman.

Geno’s focuses on high-quality brands, including Robert Graham, Tommy Bahama, Mantoni, Johnston & Murphy, Allen Edmonds, Cole Haan, Hugo Boss, Lacoste and True Religion. Fun touches include cufflinks with the University of Kansas and Kansas State University symbols.

“I think men like upscale, good looking clothing and people like the personal shopping. ‘I need shoes, I need jeans for Saturday night or I need a suit for an interview’ and we help them put an outfit together. That’s why they keep coming back,” Geno Fuksman said.

Openings

  • Soffia Via, a blow-dry bar and full-service salon, opened Tuesday in Deer Creek Marketplace, 6920 W. 135th St., Overland Park. Owner Brent Peterson, who has more than a decade experience doing hair in the Kansas City area, said he wanted to be one of the first to bring the blow-dry bar trend to the metro. Blow-dry bars specialize in blowouts and styling and Soffia Via charges a flat rate of $35 for that service. But unlike most blow-dry bars, it also offers full salon services including cuts, color and extensions at other prices.

Once this location is established, Peterson said his goal is to open additional locations in the area.

  • Sam’s Club will open its new Kansas City, Kan., location on Thursday with specials throughout the day including celebrity appearances, food samples and demonstrations. The store is in the Plaza at the Speedway, 10510 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kan.

  • Mio’s Italian Trattoria, a locally owned Italian restaurant, has opened at 4800 W. 135th St., Leawood. Menu items include soups, salads, pasta, fish and specialty dishes. It is the first restaurant for the new Specialty Cuisine Concepts, an Overland Park-based company that plans to open several more Johnson County restaurants under different brands.

  • Paleterias Tropicana Estilo Michoacan, a locally owned company making Michoacan-style ice cream, will open its fifth area location. The shop, 539 E. Santa Fe, Olathe, is scheduled to open on Oct. 25. Ice cream is house-made with natural and fresh ingredients, including tropical fruits. Menu items will include smoothies, popsicles, waffle cones, milk shakes, sundaes, banana splits, and Mexican fruit cocktails. It also has area locations in Independence, Kansas City, Shawnee, and Kansas City, Kan., as well as one in Wichita.

  • Famous Dave’s Legendary Pit Bar-B-Que franchisee, Dave Jones, plans a Nov. 12 opening for his new location at 11741 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park. The building had housed a Piccadilly Cafeteria, but has been extensively remodeled.
