St. Thomas Aquinas started an East Kansas League girls basketball dynasty with six consecutive league championships from 2001-06.
Don’t look now, but the Saints might be up to it again.
Rolling through the EKL unblemished this season, Aquinas, 19-1, snagged its third league crown in the last four seasons, finishing three games ahead of runner-up Blue Valley North.
“It’s a big honor for the kids,” Saints coach Rick Hetzel said. “The girls worked very hard and it’s been a great group to work with.”
Of course, winning the EKL wasn’t the biggest goal Aquinas had for the season.
“You don’t have time to celebrate now,” Hetzel said. “You’re just focused on the next game. This is the time of year you practice for all season.”
- Meanwhile, for the second straight season, Olathe Northwest went undefeated in Sunflower League girls play.
The Ravens, 16-4, who finished second in Kansas Class 6A last season, hope to use the second league title in program history as a springboard back to the championship game.
