Straub Construction wins awards
Shawnee-based Straub Construction Co. Inc. recently was honored with seven local and national awards, in recognition of some of its projects and for leadership roles in the industry. The 92-year-old company received the “top project honor” for St. Michael Hall at Benedictine College in Atchison as part of an excellence in construction competition by the Heart of America Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors. The company also won three category awards at the competition.
The Heart of America Chapter also named Straub general contractor of the year for the third straight year, and company president Ernest Straub III and executive vice president Parker Young were recipients of the 2012 Arthur C. Waugh Keystone Award..
In addition, the National Trust for Historic Preservation honored the company for its work on the Eisenhowe Ridge Building 19 project in Leavenworth. The 125-year-old property, a former Civil War mess hall, was renovated into an office building.
Hotel operator honored
True North Hotel Group has receive Marriott International’s highest owner/franchisee honor for the fourth time. Fourteen of the Overland Park company’s 20 hotels are Merriott-branded. The company also received Marriott’s Partnership Circle Award in 2004, 2006 and 2009.
True North is owned by True North Family Trust and Richard Merkel.
The company said it also has three hotels under construction.
Elementary school volunteers
The Arnold & Associates Re/Max State Line agency spent a morning in late December teaching children at Liberty View Elementary School in the Blue Valley School District how to rope.. Using six roping dummies and 20 lassos, the company rotated the children through different drills to teaching roping.
