An apparent explosion and fire in an Overland Park apartment complex Thursday night sent one man to a hospital but in good condition.

The call came just before 7:30 p.m. and the fire department called a second alarm to the fire at the Brownstone apartments in the 6100 block of Marty Street near Shawnee Mission Parkway. Spokesman Jason Rhodes said it appeared that there was an explosion on the second floor of the building and that there was a debris field of glass and window blinds. He described the fire as heavy but said firefighters knocked it down quickly.

The man transported to a hospital was the only person injured, but many of the inhabitants of the 12-unit apartment complex were displaced because of the damage and the disconnection of utilities. The Red Cross was assisting.

The cause is under investigation.
