An Overland Park man was charged today after police said he tried to take a picture of a woman in a Leawood movie theater restroom and then hid in the theater’s ceiling for half a day.
Carlos Itiel Moreira, 23, is charged in Johnson County District Court with breach of privacy and criminal trespass, both misdemeanors. His bond was set at $3,500.
At a hearing this afternoon, Moreira waived the reading of the charges and pleaded not guilty.
Leawood police were called to the AMC Theatres at 11701 Nall Ave. about 11:30 p.m. Monday on a report of a suspicious person.
The woman told police she was using the restroom when she noticed someone hold a camera or cell phone under the stall next to her. She thought the person was trying to photograph or videotape her, said Leawood Police Capt. Kevin Cauley.
The woman left the restroom and alerted theater employees, who called police.
Police looked for the man, but he had fled up into the ceiling. Firefighters helped look for him using a thermal imaging camera.
“We couldn’t find him that night,” Cauley said.
Police received a tip on Tuesday that the man might still be in the theater. They said they eventually found Moreira hiding in the ceiling near the women’s restroom. He was arrested early Tuesday afternoon.
