Authorities seized 2,700 pounds of marijuana Friday morning from a warehouse in Lenexa — the biggest seizure in the city’s history.
The marijuana was hidden in hundreds of boxes labeled as containing Reyma plastic cups, according to Lenexa police. The drugs have an estimated value of $1.5 million.
The warehouse at 14450 Santa Fe Trail Drive was previously home to a landscaping company, but police were uncertain what cover business was operating out of the location, said Capt. Don Krone.
Police will look into who had leased or possibly subleased the property.
The office portion of the warehouse was blanketed with dust, and the front window was covered with cardboard boxes to keep people from looking in.
“The entire warehouse was full of pallets of boxes,” Krone said.
Once the boxes were opened, police found two bundles of marijuana per box covered with plastic cup sleeves. Police said this was done to make the shipment appear legitimate.
There was an indication that the marijuana came from outside the United States.
The seizure was the result of a Drug Enforcement Administration investigation and arrest in Indianapolis. The investigation also led to an arrest in the Kansas City area.
The investigation continues, and police said they expect more arrests to be made.
